We were looking for a young person who has cared or is a carer for someone? This could have been a family member or friend who is suffering from a long-term illness or injury. It could possibly be they had just helped someone through a difficult time in their life.

Winner – Shannon McGinn

Shannon has been a young carer to her mum since the age of 5 becoming the primary carer for the last three years which has allowed her brother to go to university. Alongside her role at home, she has been an exceptional cadet, completing her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. 

Shannon has faced many challenges and has sacrificed her own interests to support her family, this has involved Shannon giving up cadets, drama and music clubs. However, she has managed to keep on top of her school work even when this has meant staying up until midnight to complete homework.
